WHERE ARE YOU ACTUALLY FROM?
WHERE ARE YOU ACTUALLY FROM?
This exhibition for the Immigration Museum focused on identity and belonging, aiming to educate young Chinese Australians about their culture. The seemingly simple question, ‘Where are you actually from?’ carries underlying implications of racism and xenophobia but is so often asked that it becomes overlooked. This is reflected in Chinese characters below.
East Asian faces are seen through this project, with each one displaying either red, blue, green or orange. Through hand-drawn linework the imagery is elevated with monochromatic layers to give definition – a simple way to render a portrait. Using neutral, earthy tones for the background and text complements the facial icons and is a subtle nod to the complexion we see in East Asians.
